NEW RELEASE
Kansas embraces technology on new DVD release

There are not many things a band of 30 years can say is a “first.” But for Topeka-based Kansas, releasing a DVD is just that.
Device Voice Drum, a live concert DVD, includes performances of Kansas’ hits such as Dust in the Wind, Carry On Wayward Son and Point of Know Return.
It will also feature archival footage, interviews with band members and behind-the-scenes material recorded by the band with hand-held cameras.
The band, which plays in Myrtle Beach this week, rented out the EarthLink Live arena in Atlanta for three days in June to shoot the 120-minute DVD. Five film cameras, along with numerous digital video cameras, were used for the shoot.
“You can notice how one-dimensional video can be. It’s obvious when you watch a soap opera on TV, and then you start watching a film. There’s a big difference in depth, and we did use film, which was a lot more expensive obviously, but it just looks so much better,” Kansas bassist and background vocalist of 17 years Billy Greer said.
Kansas watched numerous DVDs over the past year to figure out what to do and not to do during its concert. Shooting on tape was one of the things the band wanted to avoid.
“It just reduces the whole feeling to be that of either the lights are on or the lights are off – one or the other. We feel, and have always felt, that video is so abrasive and it requires so much light to capture an image, that we decided that we would use film and try to target the type of performance we were able to render 25 or 30 years ago,” said Steve Walsh, a vocalist and keyboardist with the band.
Instead of performing on stage, the band set up on the floor near the center of the facility with most of the audience of about 1,000 looking down at the band. The stage was used for a choir and a four-piece string section to accompany performances.
“It was so intense, having all those people right there on top of us,” said vocalist/violinist Robby Steinhardt.
“It gave it a lot of depth. When we look back at the footage now, you can see that it is a lot deeper of an event than just a band on stage playing,” Mr. Walsh said.
The band also released a companion double live CD the same day the DVD released. The CD will feature a live multimedia bonus track not included on the DVD.
Kansas also released The Ultimate Kansas in July, a two-CD collection capturing 36 favorites from 1974 to 1983 on Epic/Legacy Recordings. Mr. Walsh said the songs sound better than they ever had.
“They worked really hard on this to make it sound good, and they succeeded. If we had the kind of technology that exists now back when we recorded, I’m sure people would have just dropped their jaws,” Mr. Walsh said.
Since Kansas already has released a “best-of” album – The Best of Kansas in 1984 – The Ultimate Kansas is “the best of the best” Mr. Steinhardt said.
